Welcome May! OCSA has had a lot happening in celebration of our 5th Anniversary. Catch up on what we’ve been doing and get up to date on what we have coming up.
Cats vs. Cancer
OCSA proudly partnered with Cats vs Cancer throughout the month of April to celebrate our 5th Anniversary. Cats vs Cancer is a non-profit site, run entirely by volunteers, built to help those battling cancer. Each month, they take money raised through ads sold on the site as well as donations and give that to a cancer charity.
Chicago Originals May Restaurant of the Month Partnership
Each month, OCSA partners with Chicagoland restaurants to offer a special promotion with proceeds from sales benefiting OCSA efforts. OCSA is excited to announce our partnership with Chicago Originals for the month of May. The five restaurants participating include Cyrano’s Farm Kitchen, Cyrano’s On the River, Kiki’s Bistro, Nando Milano Trattoria and Oceanique. Visit our website for full details on the deals and offers from each restaurant and to stay up to date with future Restaurant of the Month partnerships.
Introducing Erin Platz, OCSA Intern at Penn Vet Working Dog Center
We are delighted to introduce Erin Platz, the recipient of the OCSA Veterinary Student Internship in memory of Katelyn Klepitsch, niece of OCSA Board Member Kurt Klepitsch, DVM.
Erin, a 1st year veterinary student at University of Pennsylvania, class of 2018 is from Pittsburgh, PA. She always wanted to be a veterinarian, loves dogs and is the proud owner of a Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix named Luna about four months old. Erin adopted Luna from the East Coast Adoption Agency, an organization that rescues puppies from kill shelters in the South. She is honored to be a part of this program because it allows her to combine her passion for dogs and her passion for people. She believes the work that is being done at Penn Vet Working Dog Center because it can literally save a life. A very close family friend is currently battling ovarian cancer and she appreciates the opportunity to contribute in this very significant way.
Meet Rachel Vowles
We are delighted to introduce you to Rachel Vowles. You may not know this but OCSA Board member Kristin Junkas, DVM is an avid knitter and master crocheter! She reached out to Rachel several months ago and now we have a partner in the UK. Rachel will join us as a Guest Blogger starting in May. Just imagine how many people we will reach with our message, so very exciting for all of us!!!
“I’m Rachel and I live in an old thatched cottage deep in the countryside of the South West of England. When I was first pregnant at age 38, I discovered I had a cancerous tumor on my ovary which I then had removed half way through my pregnancy. I went on to have chemo when my son was 6 weeks old, another baby 18 months later and then a full hysterectomy a year after that! I feel extremely lucky to have had such fantastic treatment on our dear old National Health Service (NHS). Recently, I have been involved in a project selling knitting needles and crochet hooks in aid of Target Ovarian Cancer, a UK charity who raise awareness, help women who have been diagnosed with OC and also help fund research into OC and GP education. I have also been raising money and awareness via my ‘justgiving’ page where there is the long version of my story. I am so blessed to be here now to tell my story – I now want to ‘pay it forward’ by helping raise awareness to as many women as I can.”
OCSA’s One Health Champions
OCSA recently began a new program celebrating individuals that support and promote the One Health Initiative. We’ve had the opportunity to feature some amazing champions so far including Thomas Ksiazek, DVM, PH.d, Julian Schink, MD, Susan Arnold, DVM, Kurt Klepitsch, DVM, Tracey McNamara, DVM, DACVP, Bruce Kaplan, DVM, Cindy Otto, DVM, Will Eward, DVM, MD and Darlene Arden, CABC. We feature our champions on our Facebook page and OCSA’s official blog.
Remember “Moe Mac”
We met Maureen McIntyre through OCSA Board President, Marcy O’Keeffe Twardak, almost 5 years ago. She was affectionately known as “Moe Mac” by her many friends and family. She was a long time, beloved employee at Corboy & Demetrio. Everyone said their final goodbye to her on April 6, 2015. She is deeply loved and sorely missed. Included in Maureen’s funeral program (at her request) was a poem, “When Tomorrow Starts Without Me” — “So when tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart. For every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart.”
